Making a Duffel Bag from Scratch
I've been wanting a new bag for a while and finally felt ready. Boy was I wrong, but I still managed to get it done! Now I just need to wait until I can travel and put it to use.

Making a Telescope Counterweight (for Astrophotography)
Переглядів 9173 роки тому
This is such a niche problem, but the solution is priceless. I use my dobsonian telescope for astrophotography and taking photos of planets like Jupiter and Saturn. However, the balance is all thrown off when I attach my heavy DSLR to the front so today I'm engineering myself a counterbalance that will hold the telescope in equilibrium again without having to worry about missing the shot. ASMR - Making a Face Mask out of an Old T-Shirt

Sewing can be relaxing so I thought I'd jump back in the sewing game with some test ASMR. Remember, this is just a test so I'll improve upon the format over time. I make a facemask out of an old T-Shirt I got for free at a conference. Link to the original pattern at Tiana's Closet: tianascloset.com/index.php/2020/03/20/a-super-easy-face-mask-pattern/ Today in my grand journey to becoming a decent seamstrer-er, I make a halloween themed face mask. I figured it's a good starter project because it's just technical enough to require focus, but not so complicated that I butcher it. I feel like I'm getting better and more confiden...

A very good video! One can also take other videos exposing the Galilean moons and combine the two stacked images in any software that supports layers. However, video trashes much fine detail by as much as 75%. This is particularly apparent in the white zones of Jupiter so unless seeing is exceptional only the dark bands are visible and usually detail such as festoons are not visible in the resultant stacked image. Obviously telescope aperture determines the level of detail but to maximise that detail I suggest using burst mode (if your camera supports it) rather than video. Burst mode takes up to 999 pictures in rapid succession for each ‘shoot’. Compared to video frames the resolution is far better and fine detail is not lost due to video compression. The images may be imported into PIPP just the same as a video and processed the same way although I prefer Autostakkert to Registax. If the stacked image is then processed using smart sharpening on a luminance layer (using an edge detection algorithm) it’s remarkable just how much detail the humble smart phone can capture. The downside to burst mode (and everything in life is a trade-off) is that it records only 10fps compared to 30fps for video so the method is best suited to those rare nights of good seeing.

That is such a good idea ... and, being "one of those guys" that can actually drive a sewing machine, right up my street. I'll be making mine (need 0.4kG to balance camera and eyepiece turret) for a 6" newt with "Malincam" low res video camera used for "on screen, live & in colour" outreach. Actually, adding the turret to get a quick flip between camera and eyepiece meant chopping 40mm of the back of the tube to get enough "in" focus for the pigging camera. Compared to that hairy job, the "counterweight" bag will be a walk in the park !!. Great idea though ... Nice one.

I liked it, I'd read it about 30 years ago, and love the "Nadia of the Mysterious Seas" anime that was inspired by this. But I still have quite a lot of faults with the book: Except getting angrier and angrier what Ned Land is doing for the months under the sea - is not described. The main 2 characters have their interest in fish. He doesn't. He has to be doing something! Working out maybe? Visibility in water is at best 30-40 metres in the clearest tropical waters. In the story it is made out to be 100s of metres. In fact when you go down to about 300 metres it's so dark you wouldn't be able to see anything beyond 10 metres. It's just too much particulate matter. But the book describes seeing all these creatures and shipwrecks in the English Channel. You really would be incredibly bored as you wouldn't see anything! Seems odd that they go days without seeing the crew despite being in the main observation lounge. Don't meet or learn any of their names in 9 months. They're having meals with them. How? The book never makes clear how many are on the ship. At one point mentions 100s, but when fighting a squid it's only 10. The whole "other people of the ship" just really is not explored. The book goes on and on listing fish and their classification. Sometimes endless pages of what fish are in which ocean and what layers of classification they fall under. It's incredibly tedious reading through this. Of interest only to somebody wanting to classify fish type x with fish type y and not a branch of fish type z's family. It's literally 10%+ of the book. It's worse than reading a dictionary. Oh - and the bad, it makes out sperm whales and killer whales are "evil" by nature, and all aboard the Nautilus take great pleasure in slaughtering them all because they're evil - it's of it's time when whales were killed, but Jeez! People hunted whales for oil, but did people really think they were evil?! Factual inaccuracies that spring to mind: -Iron is not as strong as steel. No iron ship would survive to the depths as described. These properties should have been known. Steel would not be in use when written. -The electricity from water that powers the ship - well it's still not possible. Most modern submarines are nuclear powered. -The deepest trench in the World is Mariana Trench off Indonesia at 11km. Yet the book states as fact the Atlantic being deeper than 14km as a known fact. SPOILER for the ending.... The ending is far too quick and given less detail than one of the lists of fish in one of the ocean - literally 2-3 pages. Let me speak in a tangent for a bit ... at the end of The Hobbit Bilbo is bumped on the head and so misses the entire battle of the 5 armies. I think Tolkien didn't want to write about wars, he'd seen carnage on the battlefield, and the Shire is an allegory for the green fields of England. In this the lead character gets bumped on the head and then wakes up and it's all over.
